Shape Diet", by Dr. David Heber&lt;/strong&gt;.  This is found on page 45.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is what he says in his book....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As your lean body mass increases, so does the number of calories you burn each day at rest.  Each pound of lean body mass burns 14 calories per day at rest.  For example, a woman burning 1400 calories per day at rest ( with 100 pounds of lean mass ) needs 100 grams of protein.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;100 pounds of lean mass x 14 calories per pound = 1400 calories a day&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A man burning 2100 calories per day at rest ( with 150 pounds of lean body mass ) needs 150 grams of protein.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;150 pounds of lean body mass x 14 calories per pound = 2100 calories per day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the book Dr. Heber suggests that your diet consist of 29 % protein. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How in the heck do you get your lean body mass index.  I would check with your local health clubs or nutritionist.  Tell them you want a fat test done.  Its a machine that will ask you your weight, height, activity level etc.  and when its all said and done a read-out is printed for you to keep to compare when you have it done again. In 2006, 8.7 million children were without health insurance coverage for the entire year, 55% of children lived in counties that the air pollutants were above allowable levels, 17% of children ages 6-17 were considered overweight compared to 6% in 1979-1980, only 35 % of boys and 14% of girls get 100% of the RDA of calcium in their daily diet, and intake of low nutrient dense foods that include; soft drinks, candy, desserts, salty snack foods account for over 30% of the total daily caloric consumption of kids aged 8-18. Those are just a few stats to give you an idea of what is going on. Based on the mentioned statistics the kids need our help. Obviously times have changed with regards to physical activity and out of convenience we tend to buy more processed foods. I have a child in grade school and I have yet to hear about any kind of physical fitness testing. I remember taking those phyical fitness tests...ugh! It was a pain, however, it reminded me to keep active and at what level I was currently at and where I needed to be. I also remember gym class happening every day vs. a couple times a week which seems to be more the norm now. What does all this mean? Well, I think that we need to be an example as parents. It is recommended that we take in up to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day and I know that most of us "adults" are not getting that in and that means our children are not as well. We need to stress the importance of breakfast to our children. I like to explain it to my child by saying that if we were to get into the car to go to the store and there was no gas in the tank would we make it to the store? The answer everytime is NO. Then how can we expect our bodies to function at an optimum level if we do not give it the necessary fuel to "get moving" in the morning? Breakfast is the most skipped meal and yet it is the most important meal. We should be eating like kings in the morning! If they do not like to eat a big breakfast than you can find foods that are easy to transport like making them a meal replacement shake, whole grain cereal in a baggy, cereal bar or bagel. Its also recommended that you take a multivitamin to help you meet those daily requirements. There are plenty of choices for multivitamins out there for adults and children. Find the one that's right for you. If your not sure ask your doctor. Remember children love to be like "YOU" and If they see you eating than chanes are they will want to mimic your behavior and you will both start the day out right. Its a good idea to "plan" the night before your activities for after school. Include homework time, a physical activity, reading and a well balanced meal. One of the activities my child enjoys doing with me at home is a pilates video. I have been out several times this past week and have gone a little over 2 miles....that feels great! I love the "fresh" air after being cooped up all winter. I even have a button I wear around town that has those words on it as well.  I am not talking about that though...I wanted to do a product review for something I purchased from Shape Magazine.  They have a web site store called the www.shapeboutique.com and that is where I purchased a video called Shape pilates.  When you purchase the product some of the proceeds also goes to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation...anyway, it arrived in the mail and I was excited.  I put the dvd in and soon figured out that doing this exercise on a hard wood floor was not going well.  So, if you do not have a exercise mat...definitely get one and I found one at target for $10 bucks.  I would also have some hand weights and you can find those at target or check garage sales...etc.  Its a great investment anyway.  One pair of a 5 pound weights would be perfect!  The pilates video was 30 minutes in length and easy to follow.  I find that eventhough I work out all the time this dvd was challenging and I have a point to work up to...its fine to not start out at the same level of the instructor.  Then on the dvd is a bonus menu and to my surprise there is a 12 minute..yes, you heard me right "12 minute" all over body work-out!  It involves a quick warm-up, weights, the mat and some good streches at the end.  I loved it!  Short but S-W-E-E-T!  I think ANYBODY can handle 12 minutes...think about it!  In just 12 short minutes a day...you can change the way you look. Have you set any health goals for the summer?  If not...its not too late.  You still have time to rev-up your body.  Have you ever though about doing a mini marathon or a mini triathalon.  As I have learned....a mini marathon is only 5K or 3 miles.  Herbalife the company is an official sponsor of a triathalon coming up in September out in Los Angeles.  I am not sure it will be possible to go, however, I have been training for it as if I were going to be in it.  This has proven successful.  I started my training only two short months ago...the first month I worked on getting to 1.5 miles then 2.0, 2.5 and finally 3 miles.  I am currently jogging 3 miles, however, my speed is not by any means lightning fast.  I want to maintain the 3 miles and possibly get up to 5 and then work on speed...haha. What's that mean Nicole? Well, the summer is a great time to take advantage of the great weather by mowing the grass, working in a garden, walking the dog...whatever. Just get outside and move! Anyway, I am here to discuss the rest of the products that can be effective aides to circulation and heart health.  There is a product called Nitric Oxide.  I read a book about this that I purchased from amazon.com that was writeen by Dr. Lou Ignarro who is a nobel laureate in medicine.  Nitric Oxide in a nutsell helps the body with circulation, keeps vessels toned and flexible, supports healthy blood pressure levels already in normal ranges and it can help with increasing blood flow to your heart.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Garlic is another great supplement for your heart health. I have been going to a gym since I was 14 years old.  I &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;absolutely&lt;/span&gt; love the people and when you have to &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;commit&lt;/span&gt; to driving somewhere to work-out...that's exactly what you will do, however, that does not mean that you will always be performing at optimum levels.  There are several ways to beat &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"&gt;boredom&lt;/span&gt; at the gym....you can switch how many repetitions or how many sets, you could even change your entire work-out routine every 4-6 weeks.  If you are like me and you have already been there...done that.  Well, then maybe having a trainer every once in a while might not be a bad idea.  That was what I wrapped my head around anyway.  So, then I started to look at how much it would cost me and what options are available to me.  You can be one on one or in a group.  We all know that being one on one is the best as far as attention from the trainer goes...or is it?  I decided to find out and join a group session.  A personal session was going to cost $60 per session.  In the group the cost is $22.50 and that also included doing a body composition test at the beginning of the session &amp;amp; again at the end + a journal to write down what foods I am consuming along with calories and protein intake.  Wow!  That is what I call unbelievable savings!  I asked the trainer how many people would be in a "group" and she told me no more than 5.  The first day we met there were 4 of us and by the 3rd session it was down to me and one other person.  Fantastic!  I am getting pretty close to one on one attention for a rock bottom price....besides...having another person or person's will only help keep you on track of your goals anyway.  The sessions were all one hour long and I always received a good work-out + all the benefits of going through the outlined topic of the day and my personal concerns for my own health issues....so, to answer the question of do you need a personal trainer or to join a group.  I would definitely go for the group. Are you someone who has been working at weight loss without results.....Here is something you can do to get you on your way.  Keep a journal.  Why?  This is the only way you will know how many calories you are really taking in per day.  When you have to spend time writing it down...this is when reality lets you know where you need to make changes.  Do you need to write down all food contents ~ no!  You just need to keeep track of the name of the food, the calories and the protein. ~ that's it!  How simple is that.  There are many food journals out there....I am currently using the one found on the NETA site &lt;a href="http://www.netafit.org/"&gt;www.netafit.org&lt;/a&gt;  and I also ordered one from Amazon.com which is called, " The calorie King" by Allen Borushek. That will be your goal for the up coming weeks.  Men do not go below 1500 per day and women do not take in less than 1200.  Protein is important to maintain lean muscle mass and women should take in approximately 100 grams and men 150 grams per day.  This is just one simple way you can make some HUGE changes in your efforts to lose unwanted pounds. As you age many changes occur that can help or hinder your quality of life. We do not take our daily nutrition as seriously as we should. The numbers speak ~ it is estimated that 70% of meals eaten in North America are not nutritionally adequate and 90% of health conditions today are a direct result of our poor diet and lifestyle choices....We do not have all the facts if what we have learned about nutrition comes from opinions only. The center of disease control says that the common causes of death are heart disease, cancers, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes. All of these can be minimized by? You guessed it! Your lifestyle and adequate daily nutrition. Shocking - not really. As a result of these conditions - people will require all kinds of medical treatments, hospitalization, and medication ~ if you choose to not change your nutritional habits. Before those conditions take hold you can be proactive about your nutrition. Proper nutrition does not have to be difficult. There are many resources out there to keep it simple! Aging with grace &amp; vitality will require a daily multivitamin, calcium, omega 3 fatty acids, 9 servings of fruits &amp;amp; vegetable, the energy for *daily activities, proper elimination, and a "restful" night sleep.
